I or They?

By Thomaseagle (Own work) [GFDL or CC-BY-3.0], via Wikimedia Commons

I didn't write a word last night. I suppose I was too tired from the night before where I was up late and added 652 words to the WIP for the first time in four months. That pushed the total over the 65K mark. I think I have about 8-10K left. Maybe a bit more. I have the rough outline for what happens from here to the end. Including the fates of our characters.

So, I don't have any writing for you today, but I do have a question.

Most of the time, I'm writing third person omniscient. For some reason, the current WIP is first person.

That's the question for you: which POV do you prefer to write in and why?

Just a little light thinking this morning.

It really depends on the story. Most of the time they call for 3rd person omniscient to help flush out all the characters, but sometimes a 1st person works better, especially if it's an unreliable narrator. Just like how the type of story your telling lends itself to a particular medium. Sometimes it's a short story, sometimes it's a play, sometimes it's a comic book (which is why Alan Moore is always so cranky when they try to adapt his comics into movies).

She replied to his post by saying, "I think I'm more comfortable in 3rd person."

It depends on the story. And the characters. I tend to prefer to read 3rd, because I like broad stories that take place in sweeping worlds, but the occasional YA novel, that really focuses on an awesome character, from within his or her 1st person POV can great too.

I haven't figured that out yet but I suppose it does depends on the character and the story. Good luck with the wip :)

I think I prefer 3rd person, especially when you get multiple povs. No particular reason other than I find it more entertaining.

It depends on the story. If you can tell the story well in 1st person and feel it fits your story best. Go for it.

Third person from two characters, although my latest takes on three.
And you scored big with my trivia today!

I prefer both writing and reading 3rd person, although sometimes to story calls for 1st person :)

First of all congrats on hitting 65k! I usually write third person omniscient, but there are certain stories that flow better as first person. For me it really depends on if it's reasonable that the main character has or can get access to all the information that would be relevant to the story and if my main character has a strong enough voice to carry the narrative on his/her own.

I write in first person, but that's because I write memoir. If I wrote in third person that would be weird or I would have some sort of mental illness. Not to say that wouldn't be an interesting book to write. Congrats on 65K!

We are not amused when someone writes in the 3rd person!

Well, you know me, I always write in first person, so I'm no help. Buuuut, I do understand the not getting any writing done at the moment. Jumping back into editing as soon as I can sleep more than three hours in a row.

I never knew what K stands for in this language of writers :)

I naturally drift to first person but the more research I've done and classes I've taken have made me decide that 3rd person is the best option for me as a semi-new writer. I think if I can get really good at third person I'll go back to first someday, but for now I'm just trying to improve :)

I like third person for its versatility, especially omniscient; that's my favorite POV. I've written in first person, but I like to shift perspectives and it's harder in first.

Third person omniscient. Let's face it, it's more fun when you know everything that's going on. :)

What about "Second Person". "You" can do it!

Up until about a year ago, I'd hate to read anything in first person. Now, more and more fantasy novels are in first, so I'm cool with it.

I refer to write in third person limited; it helps keep some form of suspense.

I'm not a writer, only reader. I prefer reading in TP though, don't know why.

I prefer third person keyed to the protagonist only. I sometimes write first person in short stories, but it feels odd when I attempt it for novels.

I think I am all about first person these days. Makes it seem more personal (to me).

Congratulations on the progress!
